Why Your Child Needs to Move to Learn
Research into Kinesthetic Learning shows that for many young children, physical movement isn't a distraction—it's a connection. When we link an abstract concept (like the number "5") with a physical action (like jumping 5 times), the brain creates a stronger, more durable memory pathway.
This is especially true for math. Math is abstract. Movement is concrete. Combining them bridges the gap.
Try This "Active Math" Routine
Before you open a workbook, try warming up their brain with movement. We love this video from Jack Hartmann because it forces kids to engage their bodies while their brains process the addition facts.
Take the Fun Offline
Once they are energized, you don't have to stop the fun. You can keep the "active math" going without the screen.

Here are 3 ways to use these cards for "Active Math":
- The Math Relay: Place the card deck on one side of the room and have your child stand on the other. They have to run to the deck, grab a card, solve it, and run back to high-five you.
- Jump the Answer: Flip a card (e.g., "2 + 3"). Instead of saying "5", have them jump 5 times!
- Hide and Solve: Hide 5 cards around the living room. Have them hunt for them, and they can only "keep" the card if they answer it correctly.
Math doesn't have to be a battle of wills at the kitchen table. By adding just a little bit of movement, you turn "work" into play—and that’s when real learning happens.
